Correcting the Skin
The easiest and most common fix is to simply lower the intensity of the LUT itself (Which is why you should ALWAYS apply a LUT on an adjustment layer / Node ) which in most cases will work just fine and you might be happy enough to go straight to print from there. For this particular shot, I wanted to maintain the overall look the LUT was crating but I did not like the redness in her skin. Quite an easy fix.

For me, the best tool for the job has to be the built in shadow and highlight tool that you find in Adobe editing software like After Effects, photoshop and Premiere Pro. With this tool you're able to control the image and recover some of that information you think you lost, getting a better looking image overall. Use this tool in moderation, you wouldn't want to have a HDR looking shot, its ugly and should never be used EVER!!
One of the ways you can control the effect is using masks to eliminate it where you don't want it to be. In the shot below, I used Shadow and highlight to recover the detail in the sky to both bring it alive and to create a subtle emphasis on the character. I darkened the surrounding image and left the character bright and present so that you, the viewer will be drawn to the model and not some random bits in the image. Vignettes achieve a similar effect but don't suit every shot. Learn when to use and when not to use a vignette by practising on different shots to see what works when and where.
